"Well, driving the motor isn't your task, but calculating the motor specs and placing it and using gears (if any) IS your task."

"In terms of solenoids, you can definitely go to active surplus and convert a pull solenoid to a push solenoid (drill a hole in the opposite side of the thing that gets pulled, and stick a shaft in it)"
