Does anyone know what nop does? it is just a command to use to take up a cycle? or is it some sort of customizable command? the documentation just says 'no operation'

Nope, the CPU literally sits there and does nothing for a cycle. Useful if you need to adjust timings and stuff on a very very tiny time scale.

 

(This is standard among microcontroller architectures, so although I don't know PIC, AVR does the same)
