Stepping through the code?

Last minute desperate plea for simple advice: how do you step through the code on the pic? I've just been using the simulator until now...

When I got that error I switched to an old windows xp compute

You have to change project configuration to use the simulator instead of pickit2 in order to use the debug mode, the pickit2 debug mode doesn't work for what ever reason
